Proto-Hellenic

Etymology

Unknown; from some Eastern language. Perhaps from Old Persian *vr̥da- (flower) (Persian گل (gol)), from Proto-Iranian *wṛda- (compare Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬜𐬀- (varəδa-), Sogdian [script needed] (ward), Parthian [script needed] (wâr), compare also Middle Iranian borrowings Old Armenian վարդ (vard), Aramaic וַרְדָּא (wardā) / ܘܪܕܐ (wardā), Arabic وَرْدَة (warda), and Hebrew וֶרֶד (wéreḏ)), from Proto-Indo-European *wr̥dʰos (sweetbriar) (compare Old English word (thornbush), Latin rubus (bramble), Albanian hurdhe (ivy)). Possibly ultimately a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *Hweldʰ-/*Hwerdʰ- (to grow), only attested in Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hwárdʰati (compare Sanskrit वर्धति (várdhati), Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬛𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (varədaiti)).
