From Proto-Indo-European *misdʰós (“reward”), from *meys- (“to exchange (gifts)”) + *dʰeh₁- (“to do, put”) + *ós (deverbal suffix). Cognate with Ancient Greek μισθός (misthós, “reward”), Proto-Slavic *mьzda (“payment”), Proto-Germanic *mizdō (“reward”).
