Etymology
According to Sammallahti (apud Aikio 2006), from Pre-Samic *awta, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *auþijaz.
An alternate etymology has been suggested as well: connection to Hungarian vad (“wild”), Khanty *woont "forest" (e.g. Eastern Khanty вонт (wont)). UEW proposes a common Proto-Finno-Ugric root *wamta. However, the development *mt > *vt would be irregular in Samic: contrast e.g. *vuomtētēk.
