Etymology

Action/result noun from Proto-Slavic *žьgati (“to burn, to brand”) via enlongation of the root vowel, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dʰigʷʰ-ó-s (“burning, dwindling”). Akin to Proto-Celtic *degʷis (“flame, blaze”), Lithuanian dēgis (“heater”).
