Proto-Slavic

    Etymology

Mostly limited to South Slavic. Mladenov, Skok compare it with Albanian bigorr (“type of carstic formation”) and consider Pre-Slavic origin, possibly from a paleo-Balkan substrate. Compare futher Lithuanian bìgas (“tiny, crumbled”), baikštas (“timid”).
Likely unrelated to dialectal Russian би́гать (bígatʹ, “to dry out”).
