From Proto-Balto-Slavic *m(a)ūˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *muH- (<*miuH-) 'wet, damp, to wash' [Pokorny 741-743]. Derksen, 2008. Cognate with Lithuanian maudyti, Latvian maut.
