Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic [Term?], from Proto-Indo-European *neygʷ- (“to wash”). Cognates include Ancient Greek νίζω (nízō, “to wash; to cleanse”), Latvian naigât (“to feel the need; to yearn for”).
