Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *pentà. Probably from *pęti (“to stretch”) +‎ *-ta, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)penh₁- (“to span, to spin”). Akin to Lithuanian péntis (“heel, spur”), Old Prussian pentis (“spur”), Latvian piête (i-stems).
