Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *śḗˀweras/*śjáuras. Derksen reconstructs its Proto-Indo-European antecedent as *ḱeh₁wer-o-s, Dybo as *(s)ḱyeh₂w- ~ *(s)ḱih₂w- (“north; north wind”). Cognate with Lithuanian šiaurỹs (“north wind”), šiáurė (“north”), šiū́ra (dialectal).
