From Proto-Balto-Slavic *źeidā́ˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéydʰ-y-eh₂-ti, from *ǵʰéydʰ-, a metathesized form of *dʰeyǵʰ-.
Baltic cognates include Lithuanian žiẽsti (“form (from clay)”), Latvian zìest (“coat with clay”).
