Sidna

Maltese

Etymology

From Arabic سَيِّدُنَا‎ (sayyidunā, literally “our master”), used among Arabic-speaking Muslims as a general title for prophets and saints. After the re-Christianisation it was probably identified with Latin dominus (noster) and therefore restricted to Jesus. Analysable as sid +‎ -na.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /siːd.na/

Proper noun

Sidna m

  1. (Christianity) Our Lord (honorific title of Jesus Christ)

Usage notes

  • As in English, the title usually precedes in Sidna Ġesù (“Our Lord Jesus”), but follows in Kristu Sidna (“Christ Our Lord”).
  • Rarely used on its own, where usually il-Mulej (“the Lord”).
