First attested as are in 1280-1287. Derived from an inflected form of te (“at”) and the hydronym Aar, derived from Proto-Indo-European *er (“move, rouse”). Cognates of the hydronym include German Aare, Ahr and Spanish Ara. Compare Ardorf.
