Stems from the term Atal/Atar which is proto-libyan for mountain, compare with classical arabic Al-Tur, Attestable in the naming of the city Atar in north-east Mauritania and in the text of Herodotus when he mentions the Atalan-tes and Ataran-tes (Atal-n = mountains, Atal/Atar = Mountain), the sound shifts over the last 2000 years pushed the word into its current form Adrar which comes from [Addar] which means cliff which comes from Atar which originates in Atal, the term Atal is proto-afro-asiatic term for mountain as is attestable in Oromo where tulluu means hill.
