Etymology

From Middle High German ūfhœren (“to stop”), equivalent to auf- (“up”) +‎ hören (“to hear, listen, obey”). The sense is explained as a generalisation from “to obey a prohibition and desist”. Compare archaic Dutch ophoren.

Usage notes

When followed by another verb, the normal construction is with zu + infinitive. Alternatively, the nominal construction with mit + gerund (nominalised infinitive) can be used. Colloquially, a transitive construction is also possible: Sie hat das Rauchen aufgehört. Compare the same in anfangen (“to start”).
