Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *bẹlgü, a derivation of Proto-Turkic *bẹl- (“to denote, to designate”)[1]. Cognates include Turkish belli, Kumyk белги (belgi), Chuvash паллӑ (pallă, “sign, label, mark, estimate”). Possibly related to Proto-Turkic *bil- (“to know”).
