From Proto-Germanic *bazją, of uncertain origin. Cognate with Old Saxon beri (Dutch bes), Old High German beri (German Beere), Old Norse ber, Gothic *𐌱𐌰𐍃𐌹 (*basi), as in 𐍅𐌴𐌹𐌽𐌰𐌱𐌰𐍃𐌹 (weinabasi, “grape”).
