From Ottoman Turkish جهنم‎ (cehennem), from Arabic جَهَنَّم‎ (jahannam), from Hebrew גהינום‎ (Gehinóm), from גַּיא בֶּן הִנֹּם‎ (Gé bén Hinóm, “Valley of Hinnom's Son”). Compare Macedonian џенем (dženem), and obsolete and dialectal Bulgarian джендем (džendem).
