From Proto-Albanian *dzelpinā, altered from earlier *welpinā, diminutive of Proto-Indo-European *h₂u̯l(o)p ~ *h₂ulp (“(red) fox”) (compare Italian volpe, Lithuanian lãpė, Greek αλεπού (alepoú), Armenian աղվես (ałves)).[1]
