Etymology

Native development but its origin is disputed:[1]

  1. Lexicalization of e/ez (“this”) demonstrative pronoun (ultimately from Proto-Uralic *e- (“this”))[2] + -l (ablative case suffix) which changed to gy via palatalization and affrication.
  2. Derivation from e/ez (“this”) demonstrative pronoun (ultimately from Proto-Uralic *e- (“this”)) + -gy (nominal-forming suffix).
  3. Relation with Proto-Uralic *ede (“the front, fore[part]”) has also been suggested.[3]
