From Old Spanish embaraçar, from Portuguese embaraçar (literally “to tangle, to snarl”), from baraço (“twine, tether, noose”), from Arabic مَرَسَة‎ (marasa, “rope”). See the Portuguese entry for more. The source of French embarrasser, whence English embarrass.
