enklauw

Dutch

Etymology

There are two possible origins put forward:

  • A folk etymological interpretation of Proto-Germanic *ankulaz (“ankle, hip”), which descended separately into Dutch as enkel (“ankle”).
  • Equivalent to a compound of enkel (“ankle”) +‎ klauw (“claw”), where the first part lost its suffix -kel through haplology.

Cognate with Old English anclēow.
