    Etymology

From the verb entendre, from Middle French entendre and Old French entendre, from Latin intendere, present active infinitive of intendō (“to turn one’s attention, to strain”). Alternatively, from Latin intenta; perhaps through a substantivized Vulgar Latin past participle *intendita, as a variant of intenta (cf. intenditus). See also tente.
