Cognate with Old Saxon falu, Middle Dutch valu, vale (Dutch vaal), Old High German falo (German fahl), Old Norse fǫlr. The common Germanic is cognate with Latin pallidus, Ancient Greek πελιτνός (pelitnós) and Old Armenian ալիք (alikʿ, “wave, gray hair”).
