From Old French gesir, from Latin iacēre, jacēre, present active infinitive of iaceō, from Proto-Italic *jakēō. Cognate with Italian giacere, Spanish yacer, Portuguese jazer and Romanian zăcea.

The circumflex on the ‘i’ in the third-person singular present indicative has been optional since the 1990 French spelling reforms; see gît (old spelling) and git (new spelling).
