Etymology 1

From Proto-Germanic *juką, from Proto-Indo-European *yugóm. Cognate with Old Saxon juc, Dutch juk, Old High German joh (German Joch), Old Norse ok (Swedish ok), Gothic 𐌾𐌿𐌺 (juk). Proto-Indo-European *yugóm is also the source of Vedic Sanskrit युग (yuga, “yoke, team”); compare Sanskrit योग (yoga, “act of yoking”), Ancient Greek ζυγόν (zugón), Latin iugum, Old Church Slavonic иго (igo) (Polish igo), Lithuanian jùngti, Welsh iau.
