From Old Irish ginach, ginech, genech, genach (“greedy, gaping; greed, voracity”), from gi(u)n (“mouth”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵénus (“cheek, jaw, chin”). Compare Welsh gen (“cheek, chin”).
