Etymology

Possibly from Old French gaschier, gacher, gasser (“to soil, spoil, waste”) and gaschier, guaschier, waschier (“to wash, soak”), both from Old Frankish *waskan, *wascōn (“to wash, bathe”), from Proto-Germanic *waskaną (“to wash”), related to French gâcher (“to waste, mess up”); from Proto-Indo-European *wod- (“wet”). See gâcher, wash. Alternatively, from guazzo, guazza.
