Inherited from an ellipsis of Late Latin pariēs fōrmācea (“a moulded wall”), from fōrmāceus, in reference to its being made by stuffing between two boards. Related to Ancient Greek μορφή (morphḗ, “a shape, form”). Reflects pared's change of gender from the original masculine. Compare hormazo and horma (“dry stone wall”).
