Derived from an older verb *kapt (“to hit”) (cf. Lithuanian kàpti (“to chop, to hit”)), whence also kapāt.[1]

izkapts f (6th declension)

1. scythe (farming tool consisting of a bent blade attached to a long handle (a snath), used for cutting grass, cereals, etc.)

   asa izkapts ― sharp scythe

   izkapts kāts ― scythe handle, shaft (= snath)

   izkapts labi kož ― the scythe bites (= cuts) well

   asināt izkapti ― to sharpen the scythe

   pļaut sienu ar izkapi ― to mow hay with a scythe

   Tibils sameklēja otru izkapti,... uzasināja ― Tibils found a second scythe... (and) sharpened it

2. blade (moving part of a mower or harvester machine that actually cuts grass, cereals, etc.)

   kombaina izkapts zobiņi ― the teeth of the harvester blade
