Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from Latin cōmoedia (itself a borrowing from Ancient Greek κωμῳδία (kōmōidía)), adapted to fit Latvian patterns ( +‎ -ija).

3. (Ancient Greece) a celebration in which songs in honor of Dionysius were sung in a procession
4. hypocritical, deceitful behavior
