From Proto-Finnic *kooppa. Cognate to Finnish kuoppa, Votic kooppa, and Veps kop. Compare also Eastern Mari куп (kup, “bog”), Udmurt гоп (gop, “hole”), and Komi-Zyrian гӧп (göp, “small lake, hole”).
