Etymology
From German Kappus (“cabbage”), with the first -u- coming by merger with another word with the same meaning. Compare dialectal Serbo-Croatian kapuc, kapus (from Venetian capuzzo), and also Old Serbo-Croatian (Kajkavian) kupust (ultimately from Latin composita (“mixed”).
