Etymology

Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 令 (“good; fine; excellent”, SV: lệnh).

Attested in the Annan Jishi (安南即事, 13th centry) as 領 (MC liᴇŋX), glossed as "good" (好), with "not good" (不好) being 張領 (MC ʈɨɐŋ|ʈɨɐŋH liᴇŋX), i.e. chẳng lành.
