Probably from Proto-Indo-European *luh1eh₂, through Proto-Tocharian *lŭwā-. Compare Tocharian A lu. May be distantly related Old Church Slavonic ловъ (lovŭ, “the chase”), Serbo-Croatian lȏv (“chase; game animal”); cf. also Ancient Greek λέων (léōn, “lion”).
