Probably from Proto-Balto-Slavic *mat(r)ītei, from Proto-Indo-European *moh₁-, *meh₁- (“endeavour, will, temper”), see also Latin mōs (“will, humour, wont, inclination, mood”), Russian смотреть (smotretʹ, “to watch”), Serbo-Croatian мо̀трити/mòtriti (“to watch”).[1]
