mesela

Turkish

Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish مثلا‎ (mesela), derived from Arabic مَثَلاً‎ (maṯalan, “for example”), adverbial accusative of مَثَل‎ (maṯal, “example”), with loss of the nunation, resulting in mesela instead of expected *meselen, with pronunciation of final /aː/ instead of /en/ (compare Turkish evvela, for Arabic أَوَّلًا‎ (ʔawwalan), or mutlaka, for Arabic مُطْلَقًا‎ (muṭlaqan)). By surface analysis, mesel (“example”) +‎ -an (adverbial suffix).

Pronunciation
