Etymology

Calque of Ecclesiastical Latin media hebdomas (“middle of the week”). Equivalent to mitti +‎ wehha. Presumably replaced earlier *wuotanestag (literally “Wuotan's day”), from Proto-Germanic *Wōdanas dagaz.
