From moderns (“modern”) +‎ -izēt. Probably not derived as such in Latvian, but borrowed and adapted from other European languages.

1. to modernize (to change, to improve, to renew so as to adapt to the current time period and its standards, norms, prerequisites, etc.)

   modernizēt transportlīdzekļus ― to modernize vehicles

   modernizēt telpas interjerus ― to modernize the room's interior

   modernizēt lopu ferma ― to modernize a cattle ranch

   modernizētas ziņģes ― modernized popular songs

   daudzi izgudrotāji gadu gaitā telefona apāratu modernizēja, pierīkoja tam mikrotelefona klausuli, zvanu, izsaukuma ierīci ― many inventors over the years modernized the telephone set, adding a handset, a bell, (and) a calling device
