Etymology

From earlier nakkvarr, from Proto-Norse *ᚾᛁ ᚹᚨᛁᛏ ᛖᚲ ᚺᚹᚨᚱᛃᚨᛉ (*ni wait ek hwarjaʀ, literally “not-know-I-who”), equivalent to né + veit + ek + hverr. Compare Latin nescio quis (“I don't know who”), i.e., "somebody". Development should have included intermediary stage *ᚾᚨᛁᛏᚲᚹᚨᚱᛃᚨᛉ (*naitkwarjaʀ).
