Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish نرده‎ (nerde, “where, in what place”)[1] (alternatively نره‌ده‎ (nerede)), locative of Ottoman Turkish نره‎ (nere, “what place, what part”), from نه‌‎ (ne, “what”) +‎ ارا‎ (ara, “space or place between two things”), equivalent to ne +‎ ara[2], from Proto-Turkic *nē- (“what”)[3]. Cognate with Turkmen nirede.
