Alteration of earlier *niechludźny, from nie- +‎ chludzić (“to clean thoroughly, to have high standards of cleanliness”) +‎ -ny.

Related to Russian холя (xolja, “care, attention”), холуй (xoluj, “obsequious overattentive servant”), Silesian kludzić, and also Polish schludny (“neat, tidy”), from schludzić.
