rejjaq

Maltese

Root
r-j-q

Etymology

Perhaps derived from riq (“saliva”), from Arabic رِيق‎ (rīq), in the sense of “to make someone’s mouth water”. But compare also رَوَّقَ‎ (rawwaqa, “to pour drink”) and especially North Levantine Arabic تروق‎ (trawwaʔ, “to breakfast”), which corresponds to the Maltese mediopassive trejjaq (“to eat, satisfy one’s appetite”).

  • IPA(key): /ˈrɛj.jaʔ/

rejjaq (imperfect jrejjaq, past participle mrejjaq)

  1. to feed
    Synonym: tema' (commoner)
