From Proto-Germanic *rauzaz, *rauzą, from Proto-Indo-European *(H)resg- (“to plait, wattle”), see also Irish rusg (“bark”), Latin restis (“rope”), Lithuanian režģis (“basketwork”), Serbo-Croatian rògoz (“reed”), Ancient Greek ἄρριχος (árrhikhos, “basket”), Persian رغزه‎ (rağza, “woollen cloth”).

Germanic cognates include Old High German rōr (German Rohr), Gothic 𐍂𐌰𐌿𐍃 (raus). Compare also Danish ruse (“a type of woven basket”), Old English rysc (English rush).
