From Old Frisian *rubja, *rubbia, from Proto-West Germanic *rubbōn, from Proto-Germanic *rubbōną. Cognate with West Frisian robje (“to rub, hit”), English rub, Dutch rubben (“to rub, scrub, get rid of scales”), Icelandic rubba (“to scrape”).
