Etymology

From Old Portuguese sotoo, sotão, from Vulgar Latin *subtulum, from Latin subtus[1]. Compare Galician soto (“ground floor; cellar”) and Spanish sótano (“cellar”). Less likely from a Vulgar Latin *subtanus[2] (whence Italian sottano), itself also a derivative of subtus (“below”).
