sadid

Maltese

Etymology

Formally from Arabic صَدِيد‎ (ṣadīd, “pus, ichor”), but the sense from صَدَأ‎ (ṣadaʾ, “rust”). The latter could easily have become *sadd in Maltese, thus being merged with the root of the first-mentioned word. Semantically both refer to impure substances forming on surfaces. Compare the same in Algerian Arabic صديد‎ (ṣdīd, “rust”). Note also the rhyme with ħadid (“iron”).
