stävja
Swedish
Etymology
From Old Norse stefja (“to prevent”), likely borrowed at a late stage rather than inherited. Arguably related to steðja (“to stop”) and thus from Proto-Germanic *stadiz. More likely related to stav (“staff; rod”), and thus from Proto-Germanic *stabaz.
