From German Schwindel (“giddiness, swindle”), from schwindeln (“to be giddy, cheat, swindle”). Suffixed with -i to resolve the word-final consonant cluster, compare Hungarian cetli from (Austro-)Bavarian ze’dl or German Zettel (/ˈt͡sɛtl̩/) etc.
