From Proto-Ugric *seppä, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *śeppä (“skilled”). Cognates include Finnish seppä and Estonian sepp. Compare Proto-Samic *čeappē (“skillful”) and Proto-Finnic *seppä (“smith”).[1][2]
