thupën
Albanian
Alternative forms
- thupër (Standard Albanian)
Etymology
Unclear. There are two competing explanations:
- From Proto-Albanian *tsupina (“stick”). Cognate with Ancient Greek σιβύνη (sibúnē, “flute case”), itself of Illyrian origin. This is probably a Wanderwort, having cognates in Caucasian and Middle Eastern languages, such as Old Armenian սուին (suin, “spear”) and Persian زوبین (zôpin, “a spit”).
- Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *tsupera, to be compared to Old High German ubero and Latin super.[1]
Noun
thupën f (indefinite plural thupna, definite singular thupna, definite plural thupnat)
